Is there any way to buy bitcoins online without a fee?

up vote 8 down vote accepted

Of course you may trade bitcoins with just anyone without having to pay fees to a centralized exchange.

I think Bisq (formerly BitSquare) may be the best answer to the question; decentralized, free for some definitions of "free", and very low risk due to the escrow system - but not completely without fees, indeed as of 2017 one may end up paying quite much higher fees...

TL;DR:

In the first instance, my belief is that a government would have to create their own brand of Bitcoin (i.e. a new version of the blockchain) and use that to trade against other currencies. This is a useful move because the government retains control over their currency (they set the mining rules) and they don't suffer a wealth drain in the...

David Schwartz's answer is entirely accurate, but all that "bitspeak" might be a little intimidating to the average user. Let me try and put it into more plain language:

Also your example is conceptually heading in the right direction, but the real success is when the sha256 hash of the header is less than the target. Example target: 00000000000001ae00000000000000 is greater than 00000000000001adf44c7d69767585 <-- this would be a valid hash. -  LamonteCristo Mar 1 '13 at 18:54

What does the bits field represent?

First of all, we need to understand what the 'bits' field means.

Bits is in 'compact' format. This is kind of like a floating point format, but it represents big integers rather than arbitrary real numbers. The first byte indicates the number of bytes the represented number takes up, and the next one to three bytes give the most significant digits of the...
